Early hearing loss is often invisible, until it begins to affect a child’s ability to speak, learn, and connect with the world. For many families, especially in rural India, early screening for hearing loss can be out of reach. That’s why SRESHT, a low-cost mobile screening device, developed by Dr. Vidya Ramkumar and team, has already been a meaningful step towards identifying disabling hearing loss in young children. With the 2023 Sree Ramakrishna Paramahamsa Translational Research Grant, Dr Vidya is taking this innovation even further. With advanced speech-based, multilingual modules currently being developed, SRESHT is evolving into a tool that can detect even mild hearing loss, and work effectively in real-world settings. Through public health workers and NGOs, the team plans to make this device accessible to every child, no matter where they live – a significant move towards making early hearing screening a reality across India.
