Congratulations to Dr. Koushik Mazumdar on achieving a significant translational milestone!
India loses a large share of its fruits and vegetables post-harvest. With most smallholder farmers depending on traditional storage and limited cold-chain access, spoilage becomes inevitable. Edible coatings can help, but the widely used shellac coatings in India are animal-based and not always affordable or preferred.
Dr. Koushik Mazumder – our 2022 Agriculture Research Grantee from National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute (NABI) – developed a plant-based, non-toxic edible coating made from agricultural by-products like wheat straw and oat bran. After successful validation and in vivo safety studies, the innovation is ready for real-world impact and has now been licensed to an industry partner, Cirkla Technologies Private Limited, Mumbai.
We are proud to have supported this journey of translation that has paved the way for sustainable, accessible post-harvest solutions for farmers and consumers across India.
